Performing CPR on a Child
Important Notice – Child CPR & Updated 2025 Guidance (Additional Training Only)
Paediatric CPR is not routinely included within the First Aid at Work (FAW) syllabus unless delivered as additional training. This video reflects the updated 2025 Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines.
Paediatric casualties are defined as ages 0–18 years, with CPR techniques adjusted by age:
- Infant: under 1 year
- Child: 1–12 years
- Adolescent: 13–18 years
Key 2025 updates include:
- Early 999 Call: Emergency services should be contacted as soon as a casualty is found unresponsive, before breathing is assessed. Breathing checks should be carried out while on the phone.
- 999 Call Handler Support: First aiders are encouraged to place phones on speaker and follow call handler instructions while care begins.
- Agonal Breathing: Gasping or abnormal breathing is not normal breathing. CPR must not be delayed.
-
Compression-to-Breath Ratio:
- If trained and competent in paediatric CPR – 15:2
- If not trained in paediatric CPR – 30:2
- AED Pad Placement: Greater emphasis is placed on correct pad placement, with life-saving actions taking priority over modesty where applicable.
Where paediatric CPR training is delivered in addition to FAW, this may also include 5 initial rescue breaths.
This guidance should be followed in line with current UK Resuscitation Council recommendations and the scope of training received.
