Amputation
Important Notice – Updated Amputation Care Guidance (2025)
This video reflects updated first aid guidance in line with current UK best practice. The management of amputations now places clearer emphasis on preserving the amputated part correctly while prioritising casualty care and early activation of emergency services.
Updated care guidance includes:
- Wrap the amputated part in a clean, damp cloth (using water or saline).
- Place the wrapped part in a waterproof bag.
- Then place the sealed bag in ice (ensuring the part does not come into direct contact with ice).
This approach helps preserve tissue viability and improves the potential for successful surgical reattachment, while emergency medical care is en route.
Updated guidance should be followed in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) and national first aid recommendations.
